Los Gauchos has always been a leader in outfitting and preparing our guests for their Uruguay bird hunting trips by providing the mot inclusive and comprehensive packages available. However, there is some planning and preparation at will be required on your behalf, because there are many items that are not available locally—items such as camo parkas, rainsuits, waders, wader belts, and sunscreen.
When you book your trip with other Uruguay Outfitters and/or through their booking agencies, they may or may not provide you with good (by this we mean detailed and accurate) information about the hunt you will be going on. Not to be overly critical, but many of them have never even been on a Uruguay bird hunting trip, so chances are, even if they do have some information, it is not first hand.
Keep in mind that anywhere in the world where you book with an agency, you will always pay more for items such as shotgun rental and gratuities—because their costs are simply higher, and to cover those, add-ons and extras have to be passed on to you. Is that a huge deal? Not necessarilty, but just be aware that their services are not “free”, or come at no additional charge…so to speak.
Los Gauchos Outfitters only accepts direct bookings. Our employees are on site at our destinations YEAR ROUND, and we are responsible for every last detail of your trip. We control every aspect of the operations that we sell—so the buck stops with us—and Uruguay dove hunting is one of our client favorites. The money you will save by making a direct booking will go toward that new piece of gear or equipment that you want, or to pay your shotgun shell bill—so don’t leave it on the table.
Ok, so it is clear. To experience the best dove hunting Uruguay has to offer, one needs to be: prepared, equipped, and sharp. By sharp, we mean your physical conditioning and shooting skills. Three full days of dove shooting will take a toll on your back and limbs if you do not prepare yourself by doing a lot of shooting before you go dove hunting in Uruguay. Hitting the gym and doing some weight lifiting will also help. While this may sound like unorthidox advice, it is still good advice. You will be raising and lowering your gun at least five hundred times per day. That repetitive motion will take less of a toll on you if your muscles are toned in advance.
Whether you go to the gym and/or the skeet range for the few weeks before your Uruguay bird hunting trip, you will be happy to know that all quality Uruguay outfitters offer massage therapy at the lodge, a must to help speed the repair of sore muscles.
Uruguay Dove Hunting – A Short List of Necessities
- Unless you will be renting a shotgun, we recommend that you bring at least two twenty gauge shotguns—either over and unders, or semi autos. We do not recommend that guests bring 12 ga. shotguns for dove hunting in Uruguay; the recoil is simply too much for most people to withstand 1,500 rounds per day.
-
A high quality pair of shooting glasses. This cannot be overemphasized. Regular sunglasses are not shatterproof, and you want to have “bullet proof glass” on when you are out in the Uruguay dove hunting fields with several other shooters. A stray pellet can (and has!) put more than one guest’s eye out over the last decade—don’t be next. We do not want to sound harsh, but safety is not just a word here at Los Gauchos. You need to have REAL eye protection on when you are in the field…
-
Shooting gloves: when one is busy enjoying the best dove hunting Uruguay has to offer, it is easy to get carried away and forget about ones hands. Any glove that you bring should enable you to access the trigger and action of the gun easily. All too often hunters bring bulky gloves that are not suited for shot gunning. We want your Uruguay bird hunting outing to be successful—so dress the part, and you will be much more satisfied as well.
-
Insect repellant. It can’t be found locally, so strongly recommend that you bring some. Airlines will not allow you to carry on, or check aerosols, so bring your insect repellant in the form of a pump spray bottle—or our favorite—in a box of towel wipes. These are refreshing, effective, and do not leak. Although insects like mosquitoes are normally not a problem, they do sometimes come out when the temps are warm and the wind is light, or non-existent.
-
A satellite phone: while not a necessity, a SAT phone is a very sensible piece of equipment to have along. A satellite phone has the power to reach anyone in the world at any time, and is the perfect piece of backup gear in the event of a serious emergency. More than a dozen lives per season are saved every year by customers who spend the extra bucks to have a SAT phone. We recommend that you rent one, because you just never know.

The list goes on…but basically, any Uruguay outfitters will tell you that when you are going to go Uruguay bird hunting, it pays to be prepared, If you have any questions at all, Los Gauchos will be happy to provide you with a comprehensive list of items that will make your next Uruguay dove hunting tri a success.
